Sapphire Art Retreat
This unique Australian art retreat in the gemfields of Australia
is held on 'Winders Folly' a sapphire claim that sits on the banks of Retreat Creek, in Sapphire, situated in the gemfields of the central Queensland highlands on the tropic of Capricorn, where the desert meets the tropics.

Patricia Windeyer,  owner of 'Windeyers Folly' was recently asked for a translation of what Folly meant.  This was her response

The Folly

"mmmm Translation... An ornamental building (tower/Gothic ruin/or Big Shed) built in a large park/ garden/or Sapphire claim,  for the purpose of pleasure from the appreciation of Mother Nature's peace/beauty and the Arts and Gems inspired by her!  Some could interpret... built for no practicle use.... as an owner of a Folly, I would disagree with that point! I have found it to be a very practical way to enrich my soul and challenge my intelligence!  And there is so much fodder for laughter and hilarity.... Fun and frivolity on the Folly."

And that very much sums up my experience working on the Folly,( a real working sapphire mine) over the past few years sharing the joy and laughter while helping to create a space that is good for our souls.  From concept to reality,  we are now at the stage where we can share that experience with other visitors in a creative space set in a unique corner of the world steeped in Australian history of inventiveness and adventure.  Putting our talents together, My own as an artist/teacher of 35years (BAvisual Arts, Dip Education) and Patricia's as gemmologist (FGA) , we are offering a unique experience  where you can immerse yourself in creating and learning in a relaxed and comfortable camp and at the same time learn about the Sapphires and fossicking.  As an artist I am continually inspired by the country here, which has provided me with interesting subject matter to explore and memories to take away.  We hope that everyone can experience the joy and self fulfillment we have gained from our experiences at the Folly.

Testimonials

My creative time was spent doing some back-to-basic drawing exercises in the morning and then wandering down to the dry creek bed with Maria and the group for plein air sketching and painting. We also had a painting safari into some more remote areas to see and sketch wider views and local bush architecture.

After lunch I spent my time painting in the shed/studio which has been thoughtfully furnished for artists. Maria was on hand for advice and critique. Others spent the time taking photos. It was a very personal creative experience.

As I am also interested in jewelry design and gems it was a wonderful to have Patsy, the owner of the Folly and a gemologist, available to chat about gems and in particular the local sapphires. With Patsy's assistance I purchased some gorgeous little sapphires and opals from the local Sunday markets as well as directly from local miners. These will be used in my silver jewelry back in Sydney.

I tried my hand at fossicking and spent hours sorting the sapphires and zircons (mostly tiny) from the stones. This was more fun than it sounds.

As I went for a full week I was  able to spend a day at local lapidary club learning to wire wrap semi precious stones and enjoying a cuppa with new friends. With all of this activity I still had plenty of time to take walks, relax by myself and recharge my batteries. My room/van was tastefully decorated and very comfortable, the bathroom facilities are shared and there is access to the lounge area and kitchen at all times for snacks and a cuppa. Overall the Folly is even better than the photos.

Thankyou Maria and Patsy for a great week. I'll be back.  Mary Lynne
